The file ...\outlook.ost is in use and cannot be accessed

Dear,

I am having some issues with Outlook 2010. In general the program works, sending and receiving email works normally, agenda and contact, everything works. The problem I am having, is when I try to send a word document straight from word. When I would go to 'Save and Send', I get the error message 'The file C:\users\user name\appdata\local\microsoft\outlook\outlook.ost is in use and cannot be accessed. Close any application that is using this file, and then try again. You might need to restart your computer.

Other users within the company are using office 2010 as well, and no one is having this problem. Now, I have to save the file on say my desktop, and then select it as an attachment. That does work, but it is weird that the option send and save doesn't work

I tried reinstalling Office (removing, then reinstalling) - problem remained.

I tried fixing the .pst file with the standard check and repair - problem remained.

Does anyone has any idea about how to fix this? Any help would be deeply appreciated

Kind regards

Gerben

Hi Gerben,

What kind of data file are you using? .ost or .pst, or both? I ask because you mentioned the .ost file is locked, but you repaired the .pst file?

Are you also using Lync or Office Communicator? If so, try end the UCMAPI.EXE in the Task Manager when problem occurs, see if this help.

.

Also, try to Start Word and Outlook in safe mode to check the issue, see if this could be caused by the 3rd-party add-ins.

Try to configure Windows in clean boot mode to check the issue, see if this could be caused by the 3rd-party services.

hii.... Dear

If outlook.ost cannot be accessed then convert your OST file in PST. To Convert OST in PST just follow the mentioned steps:

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook.
  2. Click file menu to access the drop-down menu list.
  3. Choose import and export option.
  4. Click Export to a file then Next.
  5. When you will be asked to choose the file type choose personal Folder File and then click Next
  6. Select Microsoft Outlook mailbox.
  7. Click on Next to include subfolders then Next
  8. Click Browse to store the location of PST files.
  9. Click Ok then finish to start conversion of OST into PST.

hello,

If you are not able to access ost file and outlook shows an error OST is in use and cannot be accessed then the possible reason might  be Unreliable network connectivity , multiple users tries to access the same OST file, Software conflicts with outlook application i.e background running process like communicator 2005,2007, lync, ucmapi etc.

To fix this error follow this steps:

>Disable antivirus.

>Open task manager or press Ctrl+Alt+delete then select task manager

>Select process tab

 >If you find  Communicator, Lync, Ucmapi or outlook  select it and then select  End Task

>Relaunch MS outlook  now it will not show error hopefully.
